Caravan of Dreams Dinner Date With Friends In New York & Saturday’s Raw Food Plan

The other night we met up with my good buddies Gena (of the awesome blog, Choosing Raw) and Cassie for some dinner at Caravan of Dreams (this restaurant is organic and vegan with plenty of Raw options). I kept my food Raw by having their delicious Avocado Coconut soup and a large, fresh salad that came with a delightfully spicy dressing that made my taste buds dance. My husband had a cooked vegan dish which was a burrito with seitan in it (very tasty). Gena and Cassie also kept it Raw with soup and salad. My salad came with nori strips which I asked for on the side. I agreed to try those – again. Try, I did. Twice. I just can’t do it. Ugh. Can’t stand eating sea veggies. I sure wish I could, but I can’t. I’ll stick to hiding dulse and kelp in my smoothies and raw soups instead of tossing it on salads where I actually have to bite into it. In the picture, that’s Gena on the left, me in the middle, and Cassie on the right.

Saturday’s Raw Vegan Food Plan
I have an awesome day of simple Raw food planned (read this post to learn how planning your Raw food for the day can motivate you to succeed with the Raw vegan lifestyle). It’s 9am and I have my list of food. I have a couple of goals with this list. First, I want to make sure I consume the fresh organic produce we bought the other day in a timely fashion. Second, since our embryo transfer is tomorrow, I think it’s smart to make this a day of really easy digestion and nutrient dense food. Sure, that’s usually how my diet is… but by making my food in the apartment and having most of it blended, I’m doing it more so (ensuring it’s all organic, all fresh, and all made with extra love energy).

I would like to find a place with organic wheat grass shots, too, if possible. I know, that last video showing my grimace doesn’t make it sound too appetizing when I think about it, but it’s so good for my body. And, once the embryo is transfered, it’s good for my monkey. I’m taking Amazing Grass wheat grass pills while I’m traveling but I’d like to get some fresh wheatgrass in, too. Ehem, I say I’d like to do it now, but ask me after I drink it.

1/2 quart filtered water with fresh squeezed organic lemon (let me just say here that everything I eat today is organic)
This is a great way for my body to get a little gently cleansing done in the morning after a night of sleep.

1 cup Raspberry Leaf Tea
I’m strengthening my uterus as much as possible by drinking this daily until the big day tomorrow!

Protein Shake (water, Sun Warrior’s Raw Rice Protein)
This is simple, easy, and I just chug it down quickly.

1 quart Green Smoothie (water, cilantro, spinach, fresh squeezed orange juice, bananas)
The vitamin C in the orange juice helps my body better assimilate the iron in the spinach. I can’t wait to drink this!

Garden Guacamole (with red leaf lettuce wraps)
This is the recipe I made the other day, only I made a bigger batch of it yesterday. I’m posting the recipe tomorrow, so be sure to check back. It’s fabulous.

Nutrient Soup (water, fresh lemon and lime juice, dinosaur kale, heirloom tomato, red bell pepper, orange bell pepper, celery, avocado, salt)
I love making Raw soups like this. They’re super easy, really filling because of the fiber and the avocado, and they’re so nutritious.

If I’m hungry later tonight, I’ll have some Raw granola and Raw sunflower seed milk.

Have an awesome day and make it a point to eat more Raw Vegan today! Your body will thank you. The environment will thank you. The animals will thank you.

High Raw Food For The Day – Pure Deliciousness

Today’s awesome High Raw food (all organic):

Organic Herbal Tea
My favorite brands of tea are Mountain Rose Herbs and Traditional Medicinals. Today I made a mixture of Raspberry Leaf, Nettle, and Alfalfa. Nice female tonic. Go girl!

Pretty & Jazzy Juice
This juice was so dang pretty, I didn’t want to drink it. I just wanted to stare at it. I made it with my Breville and it contained 2 oranges (peeled), 7 smallish/medium carrots, big ol’ knob of ginger. The orange and carrots made it pretty and the heavy ginger gave it some jazz. It was AWESOME! (I should have taken a picture of it.)

Big-Ass Protein Shake
Chocolate Sun Warrior Raw Sprouted Rice Protein (my favorite protein powder), Hemp Protein (awesome complete protein giving much needed essential fatty acids – Got Hemp?), dash of stevia powder, and Amazing Grass Wheat Grass Powder (I take this when I travel to ensure I’m getting plenty of alkalizing greens)

Handful of pumpkin seeds
These were soaked, sprouted and dehydrated. They’re a great source for iron and zinc. Yum! Zinc is important for fertility, especially male fertility!

Fresh Raw Zucchini & Cucumber Pasta

I spiralized zucchini and cucumber with my Benriner Turning Slicer (demonstrated toward the end of this video). I put it in a bowl and added fresh squeezed lemon juice, Himalayan crystal salt and black pepper. Then, I diced up red bell pepper and avocado (using the fruit scooper in this video to get all my avocado out), and threw that on top. Finally, I added fresh raw corn cut from the cob and tossed that in. My husband and I were loving up this fresh concoction. *NOTE: it’s best to cut and use the juice from lemons right before serving (when possible) because from the moment of cutting, you start to lose the precious vitamin C… like, by the minute.

Buckwheat and Fresh Veggies
I mixed up a little cooked buckwheat with a bunch of fresh raw veggies and non sweet fruit and topped it with a fantastic raw sauce mixture of tahini, tamari, ginger, and other awesome flavorings.

Dessert?
Ehem…. Chocolate Crunch Hazelnut Macaroons! (recipe here, book here)
I didn’t have hazelnuts, so I used a mixture of hemp seeds, (soaked, sprouted and dehydrated) sunflower seeds, and (soaked and dehydrated) walnuts. *TIP: I have a ready supply of these gems in my freezer so I can quickly grab one whenever I want. That’s one of the keys to succeeding with the raw vegan lifestyle. Have food on hand, already made, ready to eat. Trust me. When I’m going to a restaurant, I can grab my Raw dessert and stash it in my purse so when I get a craving for dessert, I can gobble up my secret treat. When I arrive home from a day of running errands, I like knowing that I can go to my countertop ready to eat snacks and enjoy a nutritious snack (things like garlic basil chia crisps, prunes, dates, sprouted / dehydrated sunflower and pumpkin seeds, goji berries, raisins, etc).

Today’s Raw Food – Plus Video!

Today I had a high energy, organic, raw vegan food day. It’s been AWESOME and I feel on top of the world. Yowza!

Watermelon (3 1/2 cups)

Bleh Protein Smoothie
OK, this kind of tasted like crap. I winced the whole time I was drinking it. It had filtered water, raw rice protein powder (vanilla flavor, I like the chocolate much better), hemp protein powder, Amazing Grass wheat grass powder, and an orange (peeled). I chugged it down and was glad to be done with it. Bleh.

Watermelon (2 cups)
Remember! One of the main food combining rules (to always follow) is eating melons alone. So, I had this watermelon more than an hour after my protein shake (giving my shake time to digest and leave my stomach).

Fresh Green Juice (3 cups)
Vibrant, delicious, nutritious… this stuff made my cells dance all day long. Green juice, or as you know I love to call it, Plant Blood, is SO good for you!!! Today’s concoction had (all organic) dinosaur kale, celery, dandelion greens, oranges and apple. I used my good ol’ Green Star for this baby! That machine is amazing and is truly worth every penny.

Watermelon (3 cups)
What can I say? I LOVE WATERMELON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plain Sauerkraut (1/2 cup), 3 Prunes
I made another batch of sauerkraut today but this time I made it with cabbage, carrots, and a little cayenne pepper. I shot some video of the process and will post it later this week. Stay tuned!

Giant Fresh Salad
Tonight’s salad was a big bowl filled with romaine lettuce, shredded carrot, diced avocado and a special dressing that I made using an ingredient I’ve not used before now. I will report back later about what it was. Know this, it was scrumptious!

Plain Sauerkraut (1/2 cup), 2 Prunes

I suspect I’ll get hungry later. If (when) I do, I plan on eating organic cherries and maybe the organic white peach I picked up at Whole Foods last night.

Monday’s High Raw Food Intake

Hi Friends,

For those of you following my food intake… here was Monday’s:

Water w/ lemon
Started my day with nice large glass of filtered water with a squeeze of fresh organic lemon juice. It has such a nice zing to it… perfect for starting my day.

10 Strawberries, Coconut Yogurt (non-raw)
Major yummy breakfast of locally grown, red gems. The yogurt I bought at Whole Foods. I love this stuff. Yes, I occasionally make my own Raw yogurt, but I also like keeping a little supply of these non-raw goodies in my refrigerator. They’re a great snack or sometimes I have it as a dessert, especially the vanilla flavor. :)

Hummus, Flax Crackers, Carrot Sticks
Creamy, savory (raw) hummus on top of crunchy flax crackers and carrot sticks. Perfect snack!

Big Protein Shake
Recipe:
Water, 3T Sun Warrior’s Raw Rice Protein Powder, 2T Manitoba Harvest’s Hemp Protein Powder, 1 heaping teaspoon Amazing Grass’ Wheat Grass Powder
I love this combination – it fills me up which makes it great for weight loss. It keeps me full for a few hours. And, I love the alkalizing wheat grass. You can add a banana to give it even more oomf! (Is that even a word? My automatic spell checker says.. no.)

Herbal Tea
Lovely large mug of Raspberry Leaf Tea (chilled with a few ice cubes) from Mountain Rose Herbs. Hhmmmmm…

Large Serving of Savory Garden Veggie Pasta (without the pasta)
I didn’t have zucchini on hand, so I just made a huge bowl of the marinated veggies for dinner. I sprinkled delicious and nutritious hemp seeds on top, as well as some black sesame seeds. WONDERFUL!

Just can’t get bored of this delicious recipe. I usually make it once a week.

Chlorophyll Rich Pineapple Smoothie & Supplements

Today started out with me jammin’ out to Lenny Kravitz (hope my neighbors didn’t mind – ha ha) while drinking a Green Smoothie recipe, Chlorophyll Rich Pineapple Smoothie( 1/2 cup water, 2 cups pineapple, chopped, 2 cups yellow bell pepper, chopped, 1 banana, peeled, 1 1/2 tablespoons Amazing Grass Wheat Grass Powder. The yield was about 3 cups of green goodness. After drinking that and dancing to Lenny, I was ready to tackle the day.

Sometimes I’m asked about what supplements we take. Yes, I have a great, balanced diet, but there are some things that I feel are needed in supplement form… sometimes daily, sometimes not.

On a fairly regular basis, we take a Vitamin B12 supplement. Right now, we’re using Jarrow’s. But, we’ve also taken this brand.

In addition to a B12 supplement, we also take a vegan DHA supplement (a building block for brain and retina tissue, especially important for pregnancy, infancy (through breast milk), and old age. It’s also been noted for helping people with depression, which I am not depressed, but thought I’d pass that information along. For information about this, click here.

On occasion, we take a probiotic by Dr. Ohhira’s. Gotta have lots of friendly bacteria for a healthy body!

And, for the first time, I’m trying some Vitamin K2 (for bones and teeth). I learned about it from Shazzie’s latest book, Evie’s Kitchen. Let me just take a moment to say… this book is great. I loved reading it. It’s great for anyone with (or without) kids, or for anyone who is family planning right now. The recipes use metric amounts, so that means having to convert them, but I’m sure it’ll be worth it. It’s filled with pictures and worth the price.

Today’s Raw Food Intake

Here is a list of my nutrient filled, awesome Raw food I had today. (Everything is always organic.)

1 cup water with 1T Amazing Grass’ Wheat Grass Powder, 2T Navitas Naturals’ sprouted flax meal, and 1T New Chapter Organic’s Berry Greens
~ I started my day with this alkalizing concoction. The taste is pretty decent and it’s so good for my body.

2T goji berries, 2T cacao nibs, 2T hemp seeds
~ This was a high energy, nutrient dense snack. On my kitchen counter (see pic), I have a cute gold tray with four bowls (goji berries, cacao nibs, hemp seeds, and pumpkin seeds). I have a little spoon so my husband and I can just walk by and have a little spoonful of goodness when we want. I like to change the bowls’ contents from time to time. The cool thing about the raw cacao is that it suppresses my appetite, so there is no risk of my overeating on the snacks. :)

1 cup sliced strawberries, 1 banana sliced, 1/2 cucumber sliced
~ I just adore fresh fruit (sweet and non-sweet). It’s filled with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water. It’s a great high energy snack that keeps the cells of my body happy and dancing.

Hummus with sliced carrots and broccoli bites
~ I love the hummus recipe in my
Sides/Snacks book – so yummy. I seriously don’t know why people would eat processed (non-Raw) hummus when this delicious and nutritious alternative is available (and so easy to make).

1 cup Exotic Chocolate Milk
~ This is a FUN and unique recipe that will be featured in my upcoming chocolate book/ebook (available within a couple of weeks – fingers crossed!). I enjoyed this drink in one of my wine glasses to make the experience extra sassy.

Small Fluffy Green Smoothie
~ 1 cup water, 1 handful spinach, 1 apple, pinch cinnamon

Marinara with kelp noodles, Omega Crackers
~ I’m not a huge fan of kelp noodles. They have a weird texture to me. But, I’m eating them tonight anyway. My marinara sauce (available in my
entree book/ebook) is so good (and I didn’t have any zucchini to make noodles) so I decided to use the kelp noodles in my refrigerator. I would probably like them a little more if the noodles were used in a salad where I might expect the texture they offer. I made Omega Crackers the other day (I used Navitas Naturals’ Sprouted Omega Blend with veggies, herbs, seasoning) and we ate a few with our noodles.

Kale Salad
~ Purple curly kale, yellow bell pepper, carrots, raisins, lemon juice, Himalayan crystal salt, and Vega’s EFA oil. Major YUM!!! I LOVE kale salads!!!

Teeccino with Sweet Pomegranate Cheesecake

~ I love ending my day with a nice cup of Teeccino alongside a delicious Raw vegan dessert.

I’m heading to the gym later tonight to walk on the treadmill for about an hour. Yesterday, I ordered the book, The Face on Your Plate (for my Kindle 2), so I’m eager to start it tonight while I’m working out.

Girl Talk: Cloth Period Pads & Panties – I’ve Always Been Intrigued

It’s time for a little “Girl Talk” on Kristen’s Raw Blog.

The idea of using organic cloth pads for “period time” has always intrigued me… and, scared me a bit. I love the eco-friendly aspect of it, as well as not having to always buy organic cotton pads (I’m not a fan of tampons, even if they are organic, and only use them on rare occasions). However, I’ve always been a bit shy to try the cloth pad option. But… it keeps coming to my attention, so I decided it was time to give it a try. When I was buying my husband a hemp sweater from Rawganique for Valentine’s Day, I saw they had these “LunaPanties: organic cotton period panties” and I decided to give them a try. I haven’t had the chance to use them yet… but that full moon is on its way. UPDATE: I’ve used them and they are a bit stretchy to wear they don’t fit that well. The “pad” part is fine, but the overall comfort of the underwear isn’t anything to write home about.

Then, that same week, I was reading up on some blogs I follow, and a fellow blogger actually wrote an informative post on the topic. I highly recommend checking it out. She writes, “The minute I tell folks I use cloth menstrual pads, their expression noticeably changes into one of confusion and sometimes disgust. But as I glowingly tell them about the benefits of cloth both to myself and to the environment, they start to listen and realize it’s not so weird or strange after all.” Read more here.

On to the topic of Raw food now… Here is my food intake/plan

Water w/ New Chapter Organic’s Berry Greens (I buy mine from Vitacost.com but they also sell it on Amazon and in some Whole Foods Markets) and Amazing Wheat Grass Powder
~ I like the taste of these two products, both together and independently. It’s a great alkalizing way to start my day. I also add them to smoothies, too, if I’m not drinking them straight with water.

2 Bananas
~ Bananas are easy, full of vitamins, and taste awesome. Need I say more?

Cherry Tomatoes, Carrot Sticks, and Cheezy Hemp Nacho Sauce
~ I know… AGAIN? Emphatically… YES! I cannot seem to get enough. I’ve been making it every other day. If I’m not eating it with veggies, I eat it with Raw corn chips, and I’ve even enjoyed it w/ organic, baked corn chips. I love the flavor!!! It’s a satiating snack that keeps me filled for hours.

Strawberry Fennel Kale Salad (2 servings)
~ I’ve also been eating a lot of kale salads lately, trying different combinations of ingredients. This was a lovely combo.

3 Spoonfuls of Chia Seed Pudding w/ Raw Cashew Milk
~ This is a great way to fix a sweet tooth. And, chia seeds are loaded with nutrition (read more
here). The Raw cashews and chia seeds are from Navitas Naturals.

Goji Berries (a few small handfuls)
~ I’m making a new dessert recipe, with goji berries, so I have them sitting on the counter. I’ve been munching on some here and there when I walk by them.

Kelp Noodles and Raw Marinara
~ I have a bag of kelp noodles begging to be used in the refrigerator. I think I’ll whip up some Raw Marinara tonight and we’ll enjoy that for dinner… alongside some
Cheezy Hemp Nacho Sauce and Corn Chips of course – ha ha.

Dessert
~ We’ll either have some more Chia Pudding or the new dessert recipe I’m working on. Either way… we’re having dessert!

Today’s Food Intake

I’m writing this a tad after midnight (Thursday) to show what I ate on Wednesday, which was a day full of delicious Raw vegan food that made me feel like I was at the top of my game all day. :)

Mug of organic raspberry leaf tea (Mountain Rose Herbs)
It was so nice starting my day off with some warm herbal tea. I drank it on my porch with the sun shining brightly.

Golden Plant Blood (about 1 quart)
3 carrots, 3 stalks broccoli, 1 head broccoli florets, 1-inch ginger, pineapple (including core) This was a very pretty juice and it really got my day going with a bang!

Carrots and celery with Cheezy Hemp Nacho Sauce
I told ya… I just can’t seem to get enough of this sauce. I absolutely love it! I’m going to my mom’s tomorrow and she asked me to please bring her and my step-dad some.
(Note to self: buy more organic bell peppers tomorrow so I can make more.)

Groovy Kale Salad (big bowl, so it was about 2 servings)
This was so good, so fresh, so filled with vibrant colors, nutrition, and energy that seemed to be jumping right out of the big bowl I was eating! I’ll be giving you the recipe for Groovy Kale Salad in March’s email newsletter. If you haven’t signed up, you can do so
here.

Amazing Grass’ Whole Food Energy Bar
This organic bar really hits the spot when I’m needing a solid snack. I like these and Vega bars (although I prefer the taste and texture of Amazing Grass more).

Raw granola cereal with hemp milk and diced strawberries
I was in the mood for breakfast at dinner tonight, so my husband and I opted for a big bowl each of raw granola with hemp milk. It was yummy, especially with the fresh organic strawberries in it.

Teeccino
Although not Raw, I still enjoy a cup of this from time to time.

Raw corn chips with Cheezy Hemp Nacho Sauce
What can I say? It’s late and I’m hungry. I’m going to have it with raw corn chips this time.

Now that it’s a new month, you know what time it is… Kristen’s Raw Awesome Giveaway! (Details for last month’s awesome giveaway are here.) Be sure to check back soon for details.
