I’ve been walking lately. A lot. And, it’s so fun.
My draw to walking came as the result of some life changes I’m making:
- To chill out.
- Hear and follow my intuition. (Like, wow, it’s amazing what happens when I listen to my intuition after quieting down my friggin’ cray-cray mind.)
- Overall, do fewer things in my day. (Fewer things on the schedule, go with the flow.)
One of my favorite quotes in Taoism is…
To attain knowledge, add things everyday. To attain wisdom, remove things every day.”
My intuition told me to walk, which would help me do less of other things, because walking a great distance takes time. My intuition told me I needed it. I’ll be honest… It helps me clear my mind, and a clear mind is a powerful mind.
So, I started walking. And, I walked a lot.
I found that being out in nature, especially during the season of spring was extra special, and I couldn’t help but stop to notice and feel all of the colors and life surrounding me outside in nature.
I found myself looking at plants as they were about to blossom, excited to come back the next day and see the full bloom. Tracking the progress with pictures became an adventure.
My body feels so good after these walks, and I find myself trying to do them as often as I can. Some days I get in over 10 miles, divided. Other days it’s three miles. I feel better on days that I walk more.
You have to have proper foot-wear for these treks. Since I like to be feel the ground beneath my feet as much as possible, I wear Vibrams. Here’s the pair I’m wearing now.
I love these Vibrams because they:
- Feel like little slippers.
- Keep my feet cool.
- Strengthen my feet.
Don’t forget, getting outside is your best way to get vitamin D, which is needed for optimum health. Get into that sunshine!
One of my favorite parts about walking, other than the crazy awesome nature I witness, is listening to the Outlander books from Audible. That’s the reason I can walk so long and so often. The time flies by as I get sucked into the story. Addictive.
If you want to walk more but think you might get bored, I highly recommend audiobook. Podcasts are great, but audiobooks are better.
Walking + Audiobooks = Awesome.
Then, to keep you even MORE inspired, get a Fitbit! This pedometer is one of my most favorite gadgets. Love this thing. It keeps me motivated to keep moving.
I’m going to get my daughter, Kamea, a Fitbit. It’s going to be great for teaching distance, math, movement, and it’ll encourage her to move more.
So, go ahead. Give yourself permission to get outside and move more, breathe the fresh air, look at the flowers and really see them.
Slow life down.
